Historic Brownsville Museum

This exhibit is available to visitors during its display with paid museum admission. Icons are religious images that date back to the time of the pharaohs, but most often belong to the early Russian or Greek Christian Orthodox Church. They were painted by monks or artists directly connected to the Church, and have always been painted on wood. Dr. Gawenda moved to Brownsville from Germany in 1981 and he is one of the few people in the world who has mastered the unique form of creating this art. His private collection of over 100 items will be on display at Historic Brownsville Museum from October 10 through January 10, 2018.
