Behind its historic facade, Market Square contains a trove of rich history.

Constructed in 1850, Market Square opened as an open-air market in 1852 in downtown Brownsville. In early 2009, Market Square was leased to the Brownsville Historicial Association

Now, with the support of the Stillman Trust, Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation and the City of Brownsville, Market Square became the home of BHA’s collections and archives.

The vaults of what is now the Market Square Research Center houses one of the largest South Texas photograph collections in the Rio Grande Valley. Additionally, the archives are home to numerous documents, which include the Frank Cushman Piece Papers and the A.A. Champion Collection

The Brownsville Society for the Performing Arts will host the 19th Annual Brownsville Latin Jazz Festival this weekend in the heart of historic downtown Brownsville.

The festival was inaugurated in 1997 by the “King of Latin Music” Tito Puente, and has showcased more than a dozen high-caliber artists, influencing the youth and advancing cultural diversity, the BSPA’s website says.

With support from the Brownsville Historical Association, this year’s event will take place in “the delightful indoor/outdoor ambience that resulted from BHA’s restoration of Market Square, in the very heart of Brownsville’s Historic Downtown District,” the website says.
